WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Go on a weekday. Weekends and holidays are the busiest, so a weekday morning is calmer. Walk round the main shrine, then browse the handicraft shops in the wider Bylakuppe settlement. Dress modestly and ask before photographing monks.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

Drubwang Padma Norbu (Penor) Rinpoche founded Namdroling in 1963, after he left Tibet in 1959. It is described as the largest teaching centre of the Nyingma lineage. Karnataka Tourism says the complex is home to roughly 600 monks, and the central shrine houses statues of the Buddha, Amitayus and Padmasambhava.
