WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Go in the evening session when the dome is lit and the compound is quiet. It is a working Shiva temple, so cover shoulders and knees and expect to remove footwear. It sits in the middle of Madikeri, so do it on foot with the fort and Raja's Seat.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

King Lingarajendra II built it in 1820. Karnataka Tourism describes a central dome with four corner minarets and no pillared halls, a mix of Gothic and Islamic styles that looks nothing like a typical Hindu temple. Local tradition says it was built to atone for the wrongful killing of an innocent man, and that the linga came from Kashi.
