The hilltop temple on Machla Magra was established by Maharana Karan Singh between 1620 and 1628, modeled on the more famous Karni Mata temple of Bikaner and dedicated to the same Rajput warrior-goddess. A rehabilitation project completed by the Mansapurna Karni Mata Development Committee in 1997 revived pilgrim interest in the site. In 2008, businessman Kailash Khandelwal, working with the Udaipur Improvement Trust, built the 387-metre monocable ropeway linking the temple to Deendayal Upadhyay Park below, Rajasthan's first cable-car ropeway.
