Completed in 1651 under Maharana Jagat Singh I, who ruled Mewar from 1628 to 1653, at a reported cost of about 1.5 million rupees. Built in Indo-Aryan (Nagara) style, the three-story sandstone and marble temple sits on a high terrace reached by 32 marble steps guarded by a brass Garuda image. The sanctum enshrines a black stone image of Vishnu as Jagannath, and the temple has remained in continuous worship since its consecration.
