Locals actually bathe and do laundry here in the early morning - go before 8am to see the ghat's real daily life rather than the evening tourist crowd doing boat pickups.
Located near Jagdish Chowk on Lake Pichola, this ghat takes its name from the Gangaur festival honoring Gauri (Parvati), Shiva's consort, whose local legend tells of Parvati's penance to win Shiva's devotion. During the 18-day festival, idols of Gan (Shiva) and Gauri are carried in procession from the City Palace to this ghat and ceremonially immersed in the lake, a tradition tied to the Mewar court since medieval times. The ghat also hosts observances of Jal-Jhulni Ekadashi, when processions bearing images of Krishna converge here.
