Textiles, mojari shoes and spices at genuinely local prices if you bargain - start at 40-50% of the quoted price for non-fixed-price stalls, and compare at least two shops before buying anything 'antique', since 'century-old' miniature paintings sold here are almost always recent reproductions.
Bada Bazaar grew up organically around the base of the City Palace as the old city's principal commercial artery, anchored today by the Ghanta Ghar clock tower built in 1888 to commemorate the Mewar royal family. It has long specialized in textiles worked with the Rajasthani dyeing techniques of bandhani (tie-dye) and batik print, alongside silver jewellery, gemstones, and leatherwork trades passed down through generations of old-city artisan families. Unlike a purpose-built monument, its historical significance lies in its continuous centuries-old role as Udaipur's living trade quarter rather than in a single date of construction.
