12 km from Manali on the way to Rohtang, overlooking a dramatic gorge on the Beas River. A good, free stop for the same views many pay for further up at Rohtang, especially when the pass is closed or sold out.
Kothi, also historically known as Koshtampi, sits at around 2,500 meters where the Beas River cuts through a dramatic, narrow gorge below views of the Pir Panjal's glaciated peaks. For centuries the village served as a resting and staging point for traders, shepherds and travelers making the arduous foot crossing of Rohtang Pass into Lahaul-Spiti before a motorable road existed. It retains a temple to the local goddess Shuwang Chandika, and its dramatic gorge-and-glacier views have made it a popular filming location for Indian cinema.
