Quiet forested area around Himachal Pradesh University, 5km from the Mall Road crush. Good for an actual walk without dodging Mall Road crowds and hawkers.
Summer Hill, also called Potter's Hill, lies about 5 km west of The Ridge and was developed as a quieter residential retreat during the colonial period, in contrast to the bustle of central Shimla. Mahatma Gandhi stayed at the Georgian-style mansion of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur here during his visits to Shimla, and painter Amrita Sher-Gil's family also had a residence in the area. Himachal Pradesh University was established here on 22 July 1970, embedding the locality's identity as an educational hub in independent India.
