WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

A junction, not a monument — the name comes from a colonial-era elopement rumor. Fine as a 5-minute photo stop while walking The Ridge, not a destination on its own.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

Scandal Point marks the junction of The Ridge and Mall Road and takes its name from a popular but chronologically dubious legend that Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala eloped with a British Viceroy's daughter from this spot, provoking his banishment from Shimla by Lord Kitchener -- though records show Bhupinder Singh was an infant when the alleged incident occurred. The more likely origin lies in the reputation of his father, Rajendra Singh, whose marriage to an English woman scandalized colonial society. Today the spot holds a statue of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai and remains Shimla's most recognized meeting point.
