WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Hand-threaded replica flower garden that took over a decade to build — a novelty rather than a must-see. Fine as a quick filler stop between Charing Cross and the Lake, not worth a special trip.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The Thread Garden was created by the late Antony Joseph, a former college lecturer who took over his family's textile-brush business and, starting in 1988 with a team of nine women, spent over a decade developing a needle-free technique he called 'Four Dimensional Hand Wound Embroidery.' Coats India formally recognized the invention in 1993. After first setting up the garden at Malampuzha in Kerala, floods forced a relocation, and in 2002 the collection of roughly 100 hand-crafted thread plant and flower species was reestablished opposite the Ooty Boat House.
