WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Only genuinely interesting during the April-June race meet season; outside that window it's just a large empty field worth a drive-by at most.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

Organized horse racing in Ooty traces back to a hurdle race held in 1846, with the modern course established on 18 May 1894 at the present Hobart Park site under Turf Club rules as a loop track of about 1,400 metres. It was substantially expanded between 1896 and 1899 into its current mile-plus circuit. The adjoining Ootacamund Gymkhana Club, founded by British officers in September 1896 with a nine-hole golf course laid out in 1891 by Colonel Fane Sewell, made the Race Course part of a broader colonial-era sporting complex serving the British administrative and military community stationed in the Nilgiris.
