Highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637m. Go before 10 AM — cloud cover rolls in by midday most of the year and the view disappears. The telescopes look at the landscape, not the sky, despite what the name suggests.
At 2,637 metres, Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiri Hills and the third-highest peak in South India after Anamudi and Meesapulimala. Its name derives from Kannada/Badaga words meaning 'big mountain.' During the colonial era the peak became a favored vantage point for British residents of Ootacamund, and a telescope house was later established near the summit for panoramic viewing across the Nilgiri and Western Ghats ranges.
