15km from Mysore, easy to combine with Ranganathittu — Tipu's fort walls, the spot where he died in 1799, and the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace with original Anglo-Mysore War murals
Srirangapatna, an island fortress town on the Kaveri River, was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore under Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. Hyder Ali began the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace in 1778; Tipu Sultan completed it in 1784, decorating its teakwood interiors with murals depicting his military campaigns against the British. The town and fort fell on 4 May 1799 during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, when British forces stormed the fortress and Tipu Sultan was killed defending it, ending Mysorean independent rule and reinstating the Wodeyar dynasty as British vassals.
