HISTORY & BACKGROUND

Laid out between 1927 and 1932 under Sir Mirza Ismail, then Dewan (chief minister) of Mysore, the gardens were designed by German horticulturist Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel in the terraced Mughal style of Kashmir's Shalimar Gardens. Built to complement the newly completed Krishna Raja Sagar Dam directly adjoining it, the 60-acre garden's terraces, cascades, and fountains showcase early-20th-century Mysore state engineering and landscaping ambition. The illuminated musical fountain show, added later, has since become its signature evening attraction.
