The most atmospheric and least crowded of the Ponda temple trio. Photography is banned inside the sanctum. Pairs well with Shri Mangeshi Temple, about 10 min apart.
The deity's original shrine stood at Quelossim in Salcete but was destroyed during the Portuguese religious purges of 1566-67, prompting Hindu devotees to carry the idol inland to the safety of Kavalem village in Ponda. The present temple structure was commissioned by the Maratha Chhatrapati Shahu of Satara, with construction spanning 1730 to 1738, and the village of Kavalem itself was later gifted to the temple by Peshwa Baji Rao I. Shantadurga is worshipped as a mediating goddess who reconciles Vishnu and Shiva, reflecting a distinctly Goan theological tradition.
