Shorts and skirts are a hard-enforced ban at entry, not just modest-wear guidance - pack a change of clothes if you're coming straight from the beach.
The deity was originally enshrined at Kushasthali on the banks of the Zuari River but was relocated inland to Priol village in 1560 by Saraswat Brahmin families fleeing Portuguese conversion campaigns in the Mormugao area. The present temple structure was built around 1738-1744 with patronage from Maratha rulers, replacing the simpler original shrine, and it was subsequently renovated in 1890 and again in 1973, when a golden kalash was installed atop its main dome. Mangesh (a form of Shiva) serves as the kuldev, or family deity, for many Goan Saraswat Brahmin clans, making the temple a major genealogical and pilgrimage anchor for the community.
