Asia's largest church. The modesty dress code (shoulders/knees covered) is actively enforced at the door, not just posted signage - carry a scarf as backup.
Commissioned to commemorate the 1510 Portuguese conquest of Goa under Afonso de Albuquerque, which occurred on the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria, the cathedral is dedicated to her. Construction began in 1562 during the reign of King Dom Sebastião and the building was largely finished by 1619, though final consecration came in 1640, making it one of the largest churches in Asia. One of its two original bell towers collapsed in 1776 after a lightning strike and was never rebuilt, while the surviving tower houses the famed 'Golden Bell,' reputed to be the largest in Goa.
