Major planning risk: pathways and the wooden walkway were destroyed for renovation and it isn't expected to fully reopen until around 2027. Check live status before sending anyone here.
Established as a protected mangrove estuary sanctuary on Chorao Island in the Mandovi River, the reserve was formally notified in 1988 under India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. It is named in honor of Dr. Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali (1896-1987), India's foremost ornithologist and author of the 'Book of Indian Birds,' who was instrumental in advocating for wetland conservation across the country. The sanctuary's tidal mangrove habitat, accessible mainly by a short ferry crossing from Ribandar, supports over 400 recorded bird species and represents one of the last intact mangrove ecosystems along the Mandovi.
