A calmer, curved bay - less rowdy than North Goa. Dolphin tours are negotiated directly on the beach (~₹600-1,000); ask upfront whether the operator avoids aggressive, close approaches to the pods.
Palolem lies in Canacona taluka, an area historically home to the Kharvi fishing community, whose subsistence canoe-based fishing was documented in Portuguese colonial records dating to the 16th century. The beach remained largely undeveloped and disconnected from Goa's main tourism circuit until after Goa's 1961 liberation from Portuguese rule, when it became a stop on the overland hippie trail during the late 1960s and 1970s. Its crescent-shaped, relatively calm bay distinguishes it from the more exposed beaches of North Goa, and it has since developed a reputation as a quieter, family- and backpacker-oriented alternative.
