HISTORY & BACKGROUND

Fed by the Mandovi River (locally the Mhadei) at the Goa-Karnataka border within Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, Dudhsagar is among India's tallest waterfalls at roughly 310 meters, its four-tiered drop carved into the Western Ghats over geological time. Its name, meaning 'sea of milk' in Konkani and Marathi, comes from the dense white spray the falls generate as they strike the rocks below, and is tied to a local folk legend of a princess who spilled a jug of milk from a mountaintop palace. The falls run directly alongside the historic Braganza-era Goa-Karnataka railway line, built by the Portuguese in the early 20th century, whose viaduct bridge remains a popular but officially prohibited vantage point for photographs.
