A genuinely distinct bohemian character versus commercial North Goa. Note that nudity is technically illegal statewide - only informally tolerated at the secluded lake/cliffside area, not the main beach.
Also known locally as Harmal, Arambol was a small farming and fishing village in Pernem taluka before it was discovered by hippie travelers in the 1960s, including the American expatriate 'Eight Finger Eddie' Sinclair, who is credited with helping establish the area as a countercultural retreat. Its remoteness from Goa's main coastal towns preserved its slower pace even as nearby beaches commercialized, and it remains associated with alternative wellness practices, from yoga to sound healing. A natural sweet-water lake behind the beach and its distinctive headland cliffs are frequently cited as reasons it became a long-term settling point for foreign residents rather than just a day-trip destination.
